LaCloche Mountains - Whitefish Falls

I took a drive with my mother (who is also an artist) to see the LaCloche Art show in Whitefish Falls/Manitoulin. While we were out and about the opportunity was there to take a few photos as well.

Ruins of Wheeler Bros. Mill, (Cataract Powerhouse & Dam) Whitefish Falls, Ontario

In 1890, John Deagle purchased the charred remains of the Wheeler Bros. Mill, which had been destroyed by fire years earlier. At the time, milling was a very competitive business, there were 45 mills along the Credit River. John Deagle converted the mill building for the production of electricity which was renamed as "The Cataract Electric Co. Ltd.", power from the plant was then provided first to Cataract, as well as to Erin, Alton, and even Orangeville ON.

In April of 1912 extensive flooding caused a lot of damage to the power plant. The plant was later rebuilt, but was then sold in 1915. The plant subsequently changed ownership several times, and by 1925 it was owned by the Caledon Electric Company. By this time, water level in the Credit River was drastically lower than in previous years, and diesel generators were often needed to supplement the decreased water power.

Ontario Hydro purchased the facility in 1944, and it remained in operation until 1947.
